Homecomming Day

Alderney Homecoming Day is observed annually on December 15th to commemorate the return of islanders after World War II. Following the island's evacuation in 1940, residents were unable to return until 1945 due to extensive fortifications and damage. The first group of about 100 islanders, including children, returned on December 15, 1945, marking a significant moment in Alderney's history. Today, this day is celebrated with various commemorative events, including thanksgiving services and wreath-laying ceremonies, honouring the resilience and determination of those who rebuilt the island.
